A Working Theory udfordrer modebranchens hurtige trends med klassiske skjorter, designet til langvarig brug

What is slow fashion?

After ten years in the fashion industry, where I was used to producing eight collections a year with over 100 styles in each, I needed to return to something simpler, which at the same time was more considerate of the people who produce our clothes. I wanted to create timeless styles without fleeting trend details – shirts and blouses that you want to wear again and again, and that last in both quality and expression.

One of the reasons I started my slow fashion journey with A Working Theory was that I had a hard time finding classic shirts and blouses without trendy details - styles that were just simple, timeless and functional.

I want to challenge the mindset around clothing consumption. We should think more long-term when we buy clothes, so that we ensure that it is something we actually use. There are far too many inactive clothes in our wardrobes and too many wrong purchases.

Slow fashion is not only about quality and sustainability, but also about environmental and social responsibility. At A Working Theory, for example, we only work with certified suppliers who meet high standards.

Read on to learn more about what slow fashion is.

- Michelle Wadskjær, founder of A Working Theory

What is slow fashion?

Slow fashion definition: Slow fashion is a movement within the fashion industry that focuses on quality and longevity rather than fast trends and mass production. Instead of launching new collections every month, slow fashion brands create timeless and classic designs that can be worn again and again.

At A Working Theory, slow fashion means we have immersed ourselves in a single product category (namely classic women's blouses and women's shirts ) and create clothes that last longer - both in style and quality. We want to challenge the fast-paced mindset of fast fashion and instead put quality over quantity.

What does 'slow fashion' mean?

Slow fashion is about producing less, but better. This means that:

  • The design process is slower and more thoughtful

  • Craftsmanship and quality are valued more than fast trends

  • The materials are selected with a focus on durability and sustainability.

  • The collections are timeless and created to become part of the wardrobe for many years.

It is a backlash against the fast fashion industry, which is dominated by fast production times , large amounts of waste, and a constantly changing fashion landscape.

What defines slow fashion?

Slow fashion is not just a way of producing clothes - it's a whole mindset. It's about:

  • Creating high-quality clothing that lasts season after season

  • Minimize overproduction and waste

  • Promote more conscious consumption, where clothes are purchased with care

  • Collaboration with certified suppliers who ensure fair working conditions

At A Working Theory, this means that we design classic shirts and blouses that are not driven by trends, but instead are created with a timeless and seasonless focus.

Fast fashion vs. slow fashion

Fast fashion is defined by fast trends, mass production and low quality, while slow fashion is about durability, responsibility and timeless design. Some of the most pronounced differences, advantages and disadvantages are:

Fast fashion

  • Produces new collections every week and/or month

  • Focus on low price and fast trends

  • Mass production with high waste

  • Cheap materials, often synthetic

  • Low focus on working conditions

Slow fashion

  • Few, well-thought-out collections with a focus on quality over quantity

  • Thorough design process with time for detail and craftsmanship

  • Durable materials and long service life

  • Classic styles that last season after season

  • Clothing designed for comfort and a good fit

  • Less production = fewer wrong purchases and less waste of resources

  • Production in collaboration with responsible and certified suppliers

Fast fashion creates a buy-and-throw-away culture, where fashion clothes quickly go out of style or lose their quality after a few uses. Slow fashion goes the opposite way: Buy fewer, but better styles - and keep them longer.

Why choose slow fashion? – Here are 5 good reasons

There are many good reasons to choose slow fashion – both for you as a consumer and for the planet we live on. Here are five of them:

  1. Better quality – The clothes are designed to last longer

  2. Less waste – Slow fashion reduces overconsumption and wrong purchases

  3. Better for the environment – Slow fashion reduces the fashion industry's environmental impact

  4. Better working conditions – The clothes are produced under responsible conditions

  5. Timeless design – Wardrobe classics that never go out of style

At A Working Theory, we have created a business based on slow fashion principles. Our shirts and blouses are created with a focus on comfort, fit and durability, so you get clothes you will love to wear – year after year.

That's why we produce slow fashion at A Working Theory

At A Working Theory, slow fashion is not just an approach – it is the very core of our brand. We want to challenge the fast-paced and resource-intensive fashion industry by creating timeless styles that can be worn season after season.

We operate on a seasonless fashion model, meaning we don't follow traditional fashion seasons or trends. Instead, we focus on a few, well-considered styles that repeat year after year, so our customers can always return to their favorite products.

Instead of launching new collections every month, we develop only a few new styles. This allows us to:

  • Creating high-quality, long-lasting clothing

  • Test and optimize fit so each style fits perfectly

  • Spend time finding the most responsible materials and production methods

Our collection consists of a few core styles that have the same basic fit but vary in subtle details. Instead of replacing styles every year, we slowly expand with new colors that we can see a long-term place for in the collection.

At A Working Theory, we believe that fashion shouldn't be a quick replacement, but a conscious investment in quality. When you choose slow fashion, you choose clothes that not only look good – but are also designed to be loved and worn for many years.

We hope that you will help challenge the rapid consumption of clothing – and instead choose clothes that you can appreciate and keep.
